BACKGROUND:
The story behind the painting includes bush tucker, tali (sand hills) & water holes, 
Bush foods (‘tucker’) usually fall into these groups:
1. Food from animals including kangaroo, wallaby, possums, snakes and lizards, emus, wild turkey, rock and anteaters.
2. Food from plants including wild orange, conkerberry, mistletoe, bush banana wild passionfruit, wild fig, bush tomato, quandongs, pencil yams, mulga apple, bush plums and bush coconut,
3. Edible seeds including mulga seeds and wattle seeds.
4. Grubs and insects including witchetty grub, cicadas, caterpillars. Other grubs are found in various tree species such as river red gum, coolabah, ironwood and the prickly wattle.
5. Honey and nectars found in the honey ant, honey from the native bee, nectar from the flowers of the bloodwood and corkwood trees.
6. Water - the search for water in the dry desert conditions was essential for survival. Water could be found in soakage holes, tree roots and hollows and the very scarce permanent water holes.

Walala made the front pages of almost all newspapers around the world in late 1984. He and 8 remaining members of his Pintupi family became known as the “lost tribe“ when they left their remote Gibson Desert wilderness. They had never previously met ‘Europeans’  fearing they were evil spirits. Of course they we’re never ‘lost’. They had until that point wanted nothing to do with western society. Drought and hunger changed that and changed their lives forever.
Ironically, members of what is now better describe as the “Pintupi Nine“ are among the most celebrated Australian indigenous artists both here and around the world

Since he began painting in 1997, Walala has gained worldwide recognition, participating in several national and international solo and group exhibitions. His paintings are represented in private and public collections in Australia, Europe and the U.S.A. Walala Tjapaltjarri was first introduced to painting by his brother Warlimpirrnga, also a painter of international acclaim. 

Walala paints the Tingari Cycle (a series of sacred and secret mythological song cycles) which are associated with the artist's many dreaming sites - they are Wilkinkarra, Maruwa, Tarrku, Njami and Yarrawangu, to name a few. These Dreamings are the locations of significant rockholes, sandhills, sacred mountains and water soakages in the Gibson Desert.

BACKGROUND

Gracie Morton Pwerle is a senior Alyawarr artist, born around 1956 at Utopia in Central Australia. She is the daughter of Utopia artist Myrtle Petyarre and closely related to famous artists Gloria and Kathleen Petyarre. There is a rich artistic tradition that runs through Gracie's family as well as the Utopia community.

Gracie’s primary subject in her artwork is Arnwekety and through her artwork she depicts the changing seasonal influences on the plant. Gracie creates a wonderful lyricism in her artworks, causing a three-dimensional visual effect that guides the observer through the soft outward reaching fields of colour.
Gracie’s artworks are represented in major private collections including the Holmes à Court Collection and her artworks are exhibited regularly throughout Australia. She has been a part of international exhibitions in China, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND 
Born circa 1954 in the artistically rich area of Utopia , Betty Mbitjana is the daughter of one of Australia's most renowned artists Minnie Pwerle and the sister of celebrated artist Barbara Weir. Now married to Paddy Club, Betty exudes a great passion for painting that has led her to become a talented and highly collectible artist in her own right. Her vivaciously coloured paintings rich in cultural significance have made a remarkable impact on the Aboriginal Art scene.
Betty's paintings depict the designs that the women would paint on their bodies, and the dancing tracks which are made in the sand during women's (awelye) ceremony. Through their awelye ceremonies, women pay homage to their ancestors, show respect for their country and dance out their collective maternal role within their community. A design based on these dancing tracks is painted on women's bodies before a ceremony is performed, and this same design can be seen today in Betty's works on canvas and in the works of her mother, sisters, and aunts. Ochre, charcoal and ash are all used to paint designs on the women's upper bodies, and Pwerle women paint their chests, breasts and upper arms for awelye in ochre, red and white. The designs they use have been passed down for many generations, and only the Pwerle or Kemarre owners can paint them.The rich colours and variety of patterns are distinguishing features of Betty's expressive artistic style.
Betty also paints the Bush Berry and Bush Plum. The berry is a form of bush tucker picked in times of scarcity, cut into pieces, skewered onto wood and dried to be eaten. Betty adopts a painting style similar to the late Minnie Pwerle to convey these dreamings. Betty's mother and other women used to collect these fruits, cut them up into pieces and skewer them on a piece of wood and dry them to be eaten in times when bush tucker was scarce.Betty's inclusion of her mothers dreaming in many of her artworks symbolises a deep respect for her culture and family. Betty adds to this meaning by expressing her mother's dreamings through her own distinctive style, attributing a modern touch to the paintings.

Mavis Judadai Napaltjarri was born in the desert west of Kintore into an artistic family. Her mother is the internationally recognised artist Narputa Nangala, her father was Timmy Tjungurrayi Jugadai, 
Mavis paints in a unique  style and her bold brushwork and strong sense of design feature prominently in all her paintings. Her Dreaming's centre mainly of bush tucker, her country and women’s secret ceremony. Mavis works have been extensively exhibited and collected by discerning art-lovers around the world.

Andrea Adamson Tiger  had such a promising future ahead of her, but tragically she died aged just 46 in 2019 a year after I bought this painting.  She was born at Amata, located on the APY Lands of South Australia, 480km to the south west of Alice Springs in 1973. Her parents Tony and Kukika Adamson (a well known artist in her own right).  

The different colours in Andreas panoting  represent various rockholes ridges and sandhills. Andrea tells the story of the seven sisters and their travels through the country as they are pursued by Wati (Man) Nyiru. 
Nyiru saw the sisters as they travelled to the west. He fell in love with them, and even though they were of the wrong skin name to marry him, he was desperate to make them his. As the women fled they kicked up the sand and soil creating  the landscape around Andrea's home. Eventually they created a rock hole which went deep under the ground and came up on the other side of the hill. The women dived into the water and came out on the other side to fly up into the sky where tgey became The Pleiades constellation. Wati Nyiru followed them into the water, and when he came out on the other side he was too late. He became the morning star which is seen briefly and then disappears never catching the Pleiades constellation. Now, Wati Nyiru can be seen to the south of the seven sisters, as he still chases them vainly across the sky.

​Nellie Marks Nakamarra was born in 1962. She  was taught to paint by many of the founders of the desert art movement. Born in Papunya and growing up in the Western Desert, Nellie’s greatest artistic influences included legends such as  Old Mick Namarrari, her step-father Turkey Tolson, Uta Uta and many others.Women’s Dreaming stories from the Western Desert form the basis of Nellie’s work. Showing her family as they move through the country collecting Medicines, water and Bush Tucker, Nellie portrays a fruitful land. The women travel through the bush teaching the children where to go to find these foods and medicines.
Painting in earthy but also vivid tones she depicts women’s Lightning Dreaming, women’s ceremonies and women’s Tingari. One of Nellies better known stories is Kalimpinpa, which is the area she grew up in. The large rock hole at Kalimpinpa is a really deep rock hole. The men form a chain down to the water and scoop it up with a Coolamon and pass it up along the chain. This rock hole runs down under the ground and is difficult to access the water when there has been very little rain and the water level has dropped. Women’s body paint designs also feature heavily throughout Nellie’s artistic practice. Nellie enjoys experimenting with different colour palettes.

Sharon is the granddaughter of the renowned artist Tjawina Porter Nampitjinpa. Sharon paints the traditional Dreamtime stories of her community. Her family was originally from the Docker River but moved to Papunya during the emergence of the Aboriginal Art Movement in the late 1970s. While the depictions of Sharon’s country in her work  are traditional, they’re also rendered in a very contemporary style. Her paintings are good examples of what actor and indigenous art collector Steve Martin said about modern indigenous art; “It’s both ancient ABD contemporary!”

 In her works, Sharon represents the dedicated teaching of her famous grandmother and utilizes a bright colour palette to depict the sacred land and its ceremonial sites.  The sites depicted by Sharon represent the water sources, bush foods, and ceremonial gathering sites.

Glenys Gibson Napaltjarri was born either 1968 or 1970 at Papunya, NT. She lives and paints at Kintore Community.Glenys is a very talented artist from an extended family of acclaimed artists. She is the daughter of one of Australia’s most famous painters, Ningurra Napurrula. Most of her paintings are about ‘women’s ceremonies” . Her markings relating to the lines and marks drawn in the skin for these ceremonies.  Like her mother before her, Glenys observed the memorable male artists who were founding members of the Papunya Tula Art Centre however developed her artistic style from Ningura and other female relatives. Her works are dynamic in execution and reflect her talent as a true artist sure to succeed.

Francie Ingkatji is from Ernabella Community which is located in the far north-west of South Australia. 
Francie is a Custodian of sacred stories and part of the highly respected dancers “The Seven Sisters”. 
In 2018 the group performed at the NAIDOC week celebrations as part of the exhibit “Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters” in Canberra which is documented in the book “Seven Sisters Songlines”
Francie will sometimes paint the  creation story of the Seven Sisters who travel across the country to evade a suitor, and end up becoming the constellation Peilades.
