WHAT WE’LL DO…
ARLES / ST REMY WORKSHOPS
We will paint in the footsteps of Vincent in the picturesque villages where he did his best work. His painting bloomed when he moved from Paris to Arles in 1888. He would never have achieved the fame he has and become the most popular artist of all time if not for Arles and St Remy.
We’ll set up to paint in the places Vincent went, mostly in the ancient old town of Arles (places such as the famous Vincent Cafe, L’Espace, Allyscamp etc) and of course to St Remy and its tranquil Abbey. Some walking will be involved but really not excessive. Our easels and materials are in lightweight back packs.
We’ll paint the subjects Vincent painted — the gardens, the flowers, the landscapes and streetscapes — and we will experiment in his unique style and colour palette. These workshops are UNIQUE. No other workshop group has painted where Vincent painted and in his technique. In Arles and St Remy we have received great support and encouragement from locals.
We’ll visit the Arles markets (held on Wednesdays and Saturdays) - the biggest in Provence - and we’ll have a painting excursion to the beautiful and peaceful Abbey at St Remy where Vincent convalesced and did some of his most famous works.
(Some scheduling is dependent on weather. We have had workshops on both sunny and rainy days and it hasn’t slowed us down.)
We’ll paint in acrylics on canvas on easels. At the end of each day the canvas will be dry and can be detached and rolled up. Participants can carry their canvases home at the end of the workshop in their luggage.
We’ll do between 1-2 paintings a day. We will be flexible if you want some down time — that’s no problem. With the Fondaction Vincent museum, the art centre, the 2000 year old coliseum and plenty of great restaurants in the old town, there’s a lot to do and explore in Arles if you’re wanting a break.
PARIS WORKSHOP
We will stay in hotels in the Latin Quarter near the Seine close to Notre Dame, Ile de la Cite, Place St Michel, Saint Chapelle and in the midst of thousands of restaurants, cafes, galleries and boutiques. Each day, we will set up to paint in locations near the Seine, in the precinct of Notre Dame, near Square Rene Viviani, the Pantheon and Luxembourg’s Gardens.
We’ll paint in acrylics on canvas. We’ll do between 1-2 paintings a day. As with the other workshops we will be flexible if you want some down time.
We will have an exclusive excursion to the town of Auvers Sur Oise (approx 1hr drive out of Paris) where we will see the locations Vincent painted in his last days – some of the great masterpieces he saved for the very end. We will be able to sketch at various locations and visit the cemetery where he lies next to his brother Theo. We will lunch at the hotel where Vincent stayed in his final days. We then drive to Monet’s flourishing garden at Giverny for more sketching and sightseeing. The garden will be in full bloom.
This workshop includes a visit to the Musee d’Orsay where most of the great Impressionist and early modernist paintings are displayed including works painted by Vincent van Gogh from his tumultuous but fruitful time in Arles, St Remy and Auvers as well as works by the great Claude Monet. There is a possibility we may extend this workshop to include an additional day – if there is sufficient interest.
