Paintings from the Indigenous Art Collection of Dr David Hinchliffe and Family
This collection of paintings by Australian Aboriginal artist (mostly but not exclusively from central, south and north Australia regions) has been put together since 2017 by artist and former Brisbane City Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Dr David Hinchliffe. These paintings have been acquired as a result of proceeds from the sale of David’s own paintings. Over 900 paintings from the collection are on display at the following venues:
The paintings are lent for free and on long-term loan to the above venues.
“ I never started out to establish a collection. I started buying one or two pieces because of their surprising beauty and their underlying meaning. Sometimes that meaning is clear, sometimes deliberately opaque. Australian Aboriginal art is distinctive for being both powerfully modern and profoundly ancient. It is contemporary, cutting edge art produced by the world’s oldest continuous indigenous people.
When American collector of Australian Aboriginal art and actor, Steve Martin, saw his first central Australian Aboriginal painting (by Warlimpirringa Tjapaltjarri) he was “astonished”. He had been collecting great works of art (including by the legendary Lucien Freud, Edward Hopper & David Hockney) but had never seen anything to compare.
Major art gallery and museums in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and elsewhere have held blockbuster exhibitions of Australian Aboriginal art in the last 10 years. The International Art world is hungry for these works produced by people from among the most remote inaccessible regions on the globe.
Yet, Aboriginal art is not well known or appreciated widely in Australia.
I am making a very small effort to have some of this great art seen publicly in venues around the Southeast Queensland region. I hope it will touch the hearts and minds of others as it has me and might result in greater understanding, appreciation and respect for Australia’s unique indigenous cultures.”
